Klug nevertheless isn’t angry with the pirates, but wants them to know that their actions are incredibly damaging. "If years down the track you wonder why there are no games like these anymore and all you get to play is pay-to-play and social games designed to suck money out of your pockets then the reason will stare back at you in the mirror," he added. “Surely,” he said, “for most of these players, the 8 dollars wouldn't hurt them but it makes a huge difference to our future!" According to Klug, less than 7% of the 3,300 players who have downloaded Game Dev Tycoon on day-one did so legally. Humorous as such irony can be, it comes alongside some truly unpleasant stats. So far, this measure has done its job in thwarting pirates’ fun, leading to rather ironic comments from some of these players online, such as the one below. "The cracked version is nearly identical to the real thing except for one detail," Greenheart’s Patrick Klug explained on the developer’s website. At that point, everything the players create in-game will suffer from the damaging effects of piracy, preventing them from making a profit and eventually driving their studio to bankruptcy. This seemingly-cracked version of Game Dev Tycoon would play normally at first for the players who downloaded it without paying, until the message in the image below appears a few hours in.
